The territory of Gradara is rich in olive trees, vineyards and boasts an age old culinary tradition. The Fortress was built around the 12th century by Pietro and Ridolfo De Grifo and witnessed a succession of reigns under the Sforza and Della Rovere families.

In Gradara you can admire the grounds of the Rocca Malatestiana and visit its inner salons where the period furniture is well preserved. A walk on the embattlements offers a splendidly unique panorama by day and at sunset, and the evening promises emotions and relaxation.

Gradara, where a Museum conserves 1500 years of history, is host to many events, the main one being the historical re-enactment of the “Assedio al Castello” (Siege of the Castle), along with “Giovedì al castello” (Thursday at the Castle), “Solsfizio al castello”, “The Dragon Castle”, “Gradara d’amare” and “Il castello di Natale” (The Christmas Castle), all perfect for all the family.

Mondaino, in the Valle del Conca, overlooks the Adriatic Sea and the Montefeltro territory.

Historically, the Umbrians and the Romans reigned here, giving origin to the ties between the town and Diana, goddess of the hunt.  Mons Damarum, as it was once called because the fallow deer pastured here, was then transformed into Mondaino, gaining importance under the Malatesta family.

Today, entering the town from Porta Marina, there is a beautiful semicircular square with a neoclassic portico, the set for important historic re-enactments and shows. Outside the walls, nature and the rural beauty of hills and sea, green thickets and countryside take over the scene.

As you walk or cycle through the small villages that make up Mondaino, we have the sensation of returning to a place once lost in time.

Mondaino is not lacking in the “Ghiottoni”, narrated by Fabio Tombari, famous author of ironic tales on provincial life. You especially see them “Il Palio del Daino” (the most important, authentic and well organized summer event) and in the autumn, at the “Fossa Tartufo e Cerere”, in the season of truffles, new olive oil and fossa cheese.

Saludecio, in the Valle del Conca, rises among rolling, fertile hills. Ancient settlements from the Roman Epoch and the Dark Ages are testimony that this was a rich and powerful city, also home to Santo Amato Ronconi, an important religious figure to whom the Sanctuary and Museum are dedicated.

Saludecio was an important player in the continuous disputes between the Malatesta and Montefeltro families. The fortress and the vast city walls were built from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Following the reign of the Malatesta family, powerful families had prestigious palaces built, while intellectuals and local artists like Guido Cagnacci gained great fame. In the years to follow, an important church was built and the town became the administrative center of the valley.

The elegant town center, with 19th century austerity and surrounded by a gentle, extended countryside, is an alternation of refined buildings, important sacred buildings and the simpler village houses.

The two most important events which have become tradition over the years are “SalusErbe” and “800 Festival”, which were joined by “800NNT”, dedicated to the Noire theatre. The painting of murals on the walls of the houses during the Festival, before a live audience, has allowed Saludecio to become part of the “Città dei muri dipinti” (Cities of painted walls).

San Leo is among “I Borghi più Belli d’Italia” (the best small towns of Italy) and holds the “Bandiera Arancione” (orange flag) of the Italian Touring Club. Mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy, it gave Montefeltro its name.

It rises on an imposing rocky mass with steep walls that has been of both important religious and military value since ancient times. In the 3rd century BC, the Romans built a fortification on the highest peak.

The historic center of San Leo conserves its original beauty. The ancient Romanesque buildings include: the Pieve, the Cathedral and the Bell Tower, which are flanked by numerous buildings from the Renaissance like the Palazzo Mediceo (now the Museum of Sacred Art) and Palazzo Della Rovere (today’s City Hall).

The heart of San Leo is a square named after Dante who was a guest here, as was S. Francis of Assisi. On the highest point of the mountain, is the Fortress of Francesco di Giorgio Martini, where Giuseppe Balsamo, known as Count Cagliostro, was imprisoned until his death.

“AlchimiAlchimie” is the most important summer event held in San Leo. Over the years it has attracted numerous participants, particularly esoteric fans. Another important summer event is the “San Leo Festival”.

In 1998 Urbino became part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It is an expression of Renaissance beauty and a cultural destination for tourists from the world over.

Its origins date back to the Romans and, thanks to the contribution of the government under Federico da Montefeltro, it became a modern and functional city.

It is the birthplace of Raphael Sanzio, painter and architect, whose house is currently open for visits.

The Ducal Palace, built under the auspices of Federico da Montefeltro, with its beautiful salons, its famous façade with the small towers and an exemplary court yard, is an admirable example of architecture. Today it hosts the National Gallery of the Marche with paintings by Piero della Francesca, Laurana and Raphael.

The 15th century frescoes in the Oratorio di San Giovanni, the Cathedral and the Sanzio Theater are of particular interest.

Walking in Urbino is quite an undertaking because of the steep streets, even in the center of the city, but the architectural beauty and the view of Montefeltro are well worth the effort. Seat of the prestigious University of Urbino, the city was a candidate for the “European Cultural Capital” in 2019. One of the city’s most important events is the “Festa del Duca”, not to mention many exhibitions, given that the city is loved by important cultural figures, like Vittorio Sgarbi.

Defined as “Culla dei Malatesta” (Cradle of the Malatesta Family), Verucchio is located in the first rocky rises when coming from the sea. It has been awarded the “Bandiera Arancione” (orange flag) of the Italian Touring Club and in addition to being a beautiful town, its overhanging fortress is a very interesting observation point for taking in a vast and enchanting panorama from the sea to the hinterland.

Mastin Vecchio, the centenary family’s founding father, mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy, lived here. Much earlier, between the 10th and 11th centuries BC, Verucchio hosted the great Villanovan culture, the testimony of which is seen in the numerous necropolises and settlements, as well as very valuable findings kept in the Civil Archeological Museum in the ancient Augustinian Monastery. Other monuments include the Porta del Passarello, the Chiesa della Collegiata and the Pieve Romanica.

A walk through the city center highlights its medieval aspects, confirming the importance of the Nobility in the development of this place which also grew and was prosperous in the centuries to follow, laying the ground work for its current cultural and touristic importance. Today, Verucchio is an important golf destination, thanks to the Rimini Golf Club, with an 18 hole course, club house and practice course on the prestigious and charming Tenuta Amalia.

A variety of important historical, musical and food & wine events characterize the city of Verucchio, the most important being the “Verucchio Festival”, held in July and directed by Ludovico Einaudi, of renowned fame.
